Lawrence Kutner was born in Washington, DC, but was dragged all over the world as a child with his diplomat parents and learned to be snarky in a smattering of languages. Some of the museums he got to visit were cool, at least, and on breaks from school – including time when he should have been at school or had just been expelled from school – he was lured into extreme sports wherever they were stationed: skiing, mountain climbing, sailing, etc.

As an adult he found that as these adventures intensified, so did visits to hospital emergency rooms and the necessity for extra training in pain management techniques such as chiropractic adjustments and shiatsu.

Working for the CIA has allowed him to follow in the family footsteps of public service and avoid a dull administrative job, and even seems to have tempered his recklessness a bit... or maybe not
